Caring for Your Grounding Mat: Cleaning, Safety and Longevity

Cleaning a grounding mat with a soft cloth beside cord and outlet tester

The Groundium Grounding Mat (GM46) is built to last for years, and a little routine care keeps it both clean and conductive. Because grounding depends on direct skin contact with a conductive surface, looking after that surface is what keeps the mat doing its job.

Everyday cleaning

Wipe the surface with a soft, slightly damp cloth whenever it needs it. Mild soap is fine for stubborn marks — just wipe away any residue and let it dry. There is no need for machine washing, harsh chemicals, or abrasive scrubbers, all of which can damage the surface over time. This easy-clean quality is one reason the carbon design works well in homes with pets, kids, or heavy daily use.

Why carbon outlasts silver-fiber mats

Many fabric grounding products use silver-coated threads. Silver conducts well at first, but it tends to oxidize with sweat, skin oils, and air exposure, gradually losing conductivity over months — often without any visible sign. The GM46 uses a carbon-infused conductive surface instead. Carbon stays chemically stable, so the mat keeps conducting reliably for years rather than slowly fading.

Looking after the cord and connector

Treat the grounding cord gently: avoid sharp bends, do not yank it from the outlet by the wire, and unsnap it from the mat by holding the connector rather than pulling the cord. If the cord is ever damaged, replace it rather than using it.

Storage

When you are not using the mat, keep it flat or loosely rolled in its original tube. Avoid tight folds, which can crease the surface, and keep it out of prolonged direct sunlight and away from heat sources.

Safety, simply put

The GM46 includes a built-in 1 megaohm resistor. This means the mat is designed to connect you to the earth/ground only and to limit current — it should never make you part of a live electrical circuit. Always plug the cord into the grounding port only, and use the included tester to confirm your outlet is properly grounded before first use.

When to check your setup

  • Re-test the outlet if you move the mat to a new room.
  • Inspect the cord and connector every few months for wear.
  • Give the surface a wipe if it looks dull or dusty — clean contact is good contact.

Looked after this way, your mat should stay a simple, dependable part of your daily routine for a very long time.
